He passed away on Monday at his home in Brentwood( Los Angeles). His lawyer Laurie Soriano confirmed the news to PEOPLE and said the cause was cancer.The songwriter was responsible for some of the most influential pop hits of the 1980s and 1990s and this included chart-toppers such as ‘Like a Virgin’ which was sung by Madonna and ‘True Colors’ which was performed by Cyndi Lauper.Alone by the rock band Heart is yet another famous work of Billy.

Beginnings with Billy Thermal

Billy’s songwriting career extended across decades. He wrote for major global artists including JoJo, Demi Lovato, Celine Dion, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Pat Benatar, Bette Midler, Carrie Underwood, The Pretenders, and The Divinyls.In 1997 he won a Grammy for his contributions to Falling Into You which was named Album of the Year. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011.Steinberg’s early career began in the late 1970s when he formed the new wave band Billy Thermal. The group recorded an unreleased album before parting ways. He later formed i-Ten which was his next musical venture with his longtime collaborator Tom Kelly.

Cyndi Lauper pens emotional tribute

Cyndi Lauper remembered Billy Steinberg. She wrote on Instagram, “I’m so sorry to hear that my friend Billy Steinberg has passed away. He was such a nice guy and very supportive. My thoughts are with his family, loved ones and Tom during this sad time.” The post was filled with condolences. One fan wrote, “He was a wonderful spirit.” Another commented, “He wrote so many beautiful songs.” A third wrote, “The definition of songwriter. I am so sorry for your loss Cyndi..” Another added, “I will always be grateful for the song Heading West. May he rest in peace.”
