In the latest issue of the Architectural Digest, Stewart confirmed that she had purchased the legendary The Highland Theatre building recently. Citing her love for old, rundown buildings, the star revealed that she quite literally ran towards the opportunity to own the building.Her statement about the same read, “I didn’t realize I was looking for a theater until this place came to my attention. Then it was like a gunshot went off, and the race was on. I ran toward it with everything I had.” She further added in the interview that she has always been someone who was “fascinated by broken-down old theaters. I always want to see what mysteries they hold.”

The Highland Theatre was once LA’s most popular and oldest running theatre. It opened its doors to people from all over the country on March 2, 1925. The first film, which was featured there, was titled ‘Lady of the Night’, which starred names like Norma Shearer, Dale Fuller, Malcolm McGregor, George K. Arthur, Fred Esmelton, Betty Morrissey, Lew Harvey, and many others.The theatre was designed and inspired by the Spanish Colonial Revival style, and was best known for its iconic 502 incandescent bulbs rooftop sign. Originally, the theatre only featured 1 screen and seated 1,432 people. Later in the 1980s, construction and modifications followed, which introduced two more screens in the theatre. The theatre officially closed its doors on February 29, 2024.

The star acknowledged its historical significance and added that all of the beautiful details of the theatre need to be restored to their original beauty. She further shared, “We want to make it a family affair, something for the community. It’s not just for pretentious Hollywood cinephiles. I see it as an antidote to all the corporate bulls—, a place that takes movie culture away from just buying and selling. I think there’s a huge desire and craving for what this kind of space can offer.”
